More About Stephen Lyman

Through Lyman’s art, you can travel into a wilderness very few have experienced. You can share the sensation of being in the true outdoors – exploring, discovering, studying and enjoying the all-encompassing beauty of unspoiled nature. Stephen Lyman was an explorer who specialized in painting the most elusive moments in nature. His inspiring work was inspired, in turn, by the writing and teachings of famous naturalist John Muir. “Muir wrote, ‘Climb the mountains and get their good tidings,’” Lyman said. “I know exactly what he meant.” Lyman’s love of the great outdoors stemmed from a childhood spent in the Pacific Northwest, where hiking in Snake River country was a regular family ritual. Lyman’s desire to share his admiration for the outdoors was strong, but he enrolled in the Art Center School of Design in Pasadena, California, to learn more about the commercial art field. He started his career as a commercial illustrator in Los Angeles and soon realized that the call of the wild was stronger than the lure of the city. Returning to Idaho, he spent two years exploring and developing his own style of painting. He continued to discover the wonders of the natural world and of living a natural lifestyle. “All my paintings have their origins in my experience and perception of beauty in the wilderness,” he said. Lyman’s first limited edition print was published by The Greenwich Workshop in 1983. In subsequent years, he was a frequent participant in the prestigious international “Birds in Art” show at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. He was invited to be “Artist of the Year” at the 1991 Pacific Rim Wildlife Art Show and then received the rare honor of being invited back as an “Encore Artist” at the 1995 event. Stephen Lyman actively shared the wonder of the natural world with a legion of collectors until his untimely death in 1996. He had been recently named one of the top artists in the country by U.S. Art magazine and his book, Into the Wilderness: An Artist’s Journey, was published to unanimous acclaim in the autumn of 1995

More About Del Parson

Del Parson grew up in Rexburg, Idaho where his father was an art professor at Ricks College and his mother taught second grade. His father often took his nine children on painting excursion campouts. He found his father’s love of art to be contagious, as did two of his brothers, who became artists as well.

After earning his MFA from BrighamYoung University, Parson became a gallery and portrait artist. In 1978, a tragedy changed his life. His wife and daughter were killed in a car accident. He felt the Spirit of God helping him through the tough times and began to paint religious subjects to give others the sense of hope that he found and to share with them his love of life.

Often he will visualize ideas for paintings. After making a list, one idea will stand out more strongly than the others. Like any creative endeavor, painting is hard work, and a major oil painting can take at least a month to complete.

“When you feel inspired,” says Parson, “a painting takes on a life of its own. When that happens, the experience is pure joy. It is moments like these that an artist loves best.”

Parson now lives in Utah with his wife and six children. His paintings of Christ evoke a strong emotional response from viewers, and both his religious and historical paintings have received numerous regional and national awards. Parson’s work has been exhibited at the Allied Artists of America, National Academy of Design, Knickerbocker Artist, American Artists Professional League, and the Amarillo Rotary Show.

More About Nenad Mirkovich

The man whose first name means “surprise” in his native language delivers that element in his paintings of tranquil landscapes, crashing coastlines, peaceful symphonies and energetic jazz bands. Collectors of all ages and of varied lifestyles find something in the diverse repertoire of Nenad Mirkovich to delight the senses. He delights himself with the reactions of viewers when they discover that the same talented artist painted all these scenes.

Nenad Mirkovich says the varied subject matter and styles he uses in his work are not so different as they first seem, however. His paintings comprise juxtapositions of opposites—high drama with peaceful beauty, darkness and shadow with light and sunshine, movement with quiet. In a face or in a landscape, the elements that provide the surprise are much the same.

Born in Belgrade in 1951, Mirkovich has made his home in Houston, Texas, since 1985. He began painting and drawing as a young child, and his background as a portrait painter and magazine illustrator in Yugoslavia helped him to develop his varied styles, says his wife Donna.

His passions—besides painting—are fishing and cooking. He owns more than 150 fishing rods, makes his own lures and “can sit in a boat for hours and hours, pulling out fish,” Donna says. He also is a gourmet cook, and has developed a favorite dish he calls “Nenad Chicken.”

More About Mark Hallett

Since 1974, Mark Hallett has expressed his passion for prehistoric creatures and ancient worlds by specializing as a paleoartist, a term coined for an illustrator who researches and recreates the life of the past.

Inspired by Charles R. Knight and other great artists, he has continued to draw, paint, sculpt and conduct research into how ancient life forms may have looked and behaved for a wide variety of American and Foreign publications.

His work has appeared in Life, Smithsonian, Natural History and National Geographic as well as scientific journals and popular books.

In 1986 his paintings toured museums in the United States, Britain, Europe, Japan and Australia, among them the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History and the American Museum of Natural History. Some of these exhibits in turn opened other doors: Mark was chosen as artist consultant by Steven Spielberg to help create the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park, and later created many of the scenes and leading dinosaur characters for Disney Features’ epic film, Dinosaur!

Now a resident of Salem, Oregon, Mark loves the inspiration that living in his home provides. As an artist, author and naturalist, Mark reflects:

“My greatest desire is to excite the imagination and sense of wonder we all have about the natural world, and about the fascinating creatures and worlds that exist now and in the past. The magic of Earth’s living things and the Universe beyond waits for us all to discover as children and adults, and we can never know when that certain image or turn of phrase we see or read will change our way of looking at the World forever. If my art and writing can contribute to that, I will feel great happiness and fulfillment.”

More About Charles Bragg

Charles Bragg is a devoted student of the human race. As one of the keenest observers of contemporary times, he has etched his little figures into the American consciousness. If you recognize yourself in the pained expression on one of his characters’ faces, it is because Bragg has suffered that bit of tangled reality himself. He is a constant observer, but never an innocent bystander. Bragg is a hopelessly social beast—relaxed, articulate, playful, and very funny—and his sense of humor comes through in his work. He creates from the heart, and chuckles a bit while doing so.
