In An American Success Story, John Young made it to the moon, but was almost unable to stand upon it because of a possible system failure. This was almost the story of Astronaut John Young in his 1972 flight with Charlie Duke, when an unexpected oscillation in the back-up steering system had the potential to force them back earthbound.
Mission control jumped on the matter, researched the problem, and six hours later, determined that the mission could continue. An American Success Story records a jubilant Young on the surface of the moon.
