Will Bullas was born in Ohio, and  raised in the Southwest. He went to fine art school after high school, but was soon drafted into Vietnam. When he was away he would make pencil/sketch drawings of fellow soldiers and would send them back to loved ones. After he returned from military duty he got his degree in oil painting at Brooks Institute of Fine Art in Santa Barbara, California.
