Guarding the Lodge by Howard Terpning
While balancing an array of items in his left hand, a Blackfoot warrior reaches up to hang his sacred medicine bundles upon the tripod just outside his teepee. Originally drawn in mixed media charcoal upon masonite board, Guarding the Lodge captures a single, brief moment in sepia and neutral tones, a testament to an everyday life that is now embraced in legend.
“This Blackfoot warrior is placing his sacred medicine bundles on a tripod outside of his tipi. These sacred bundles were always hung behind the tipi,” describes Terpning. “The tokes and talismans contained in the bundle are the secrets of his medicine, a gift granted to him from the spirits through visions and dreams.”
