Description
Major North and the Pawnee Battalion by Howard Terpning
During the many conflicts between American Indians and the U.S. Government, the two were not always on opposing sides.
After the Civil War, 100 Pawnee scouts were enlisted under Major Frank North in campaigns against the Sioux. A contingent of 200 Pawnees later formed North’s Battalion, which was instrumental in providing security to the western-moving white man during Union Pacific Railroad’s expansion across the Plains.
Western artist Howard Terpning captures the scouts and their employers in a camp scene that artfully showcases one side across from the other.
