Passage by Faith by James Christensen
Life is a journey, and in many of James Christensen’s paintings, this journey is illustrated through a voyage on a river. Sometimes we travel alone, sometimes in a group, but regardless of our circumstances, we keep moving forward.
The man in the boat is one Christensen calls “Everyman.” His hump identifies him as an imperfect being; the fish – following as the man rows — is a symbol of wisdom and magic; and the candle ahead represents the traveler’s faith, which he needs to guide his way through the waters, whether they are turbid or still.
