Piscatorial Percussionist by James Christensen
James Christensen has a fancy for fish, and in Piscatorial Percussionist his favorite themes – fish, elaborate costumes, and music – amalgamate into a goulash of color and form. Christensen challenged himself to see how many fishy instruments he could wedge into a drum kit.
The finished work is, as he lightly puns, an instrument to draw the viewer into finding and discovering just how many fish it takes to create a one-man symphony.
“This painting was the result of a little game of ‘what can I do with this?’ I got interested in the idea of seeing how many fishy instruments I could wedge into one drum kit. This combines a number of my favorite themes: music, fish and ornate, complicated costumes. As always, the finished work is only an instrument – instrument, get it? – to get you to interact with the image. So, how many denizens of the deep can you find?”
