Sandhill Crane by Hiroko Cannon
Hiroko Cannon began her art career as a commercial and graphic illustrator working for major department store corporations in Osaka and Tokyo, Japan. The fast, demanding work required consummate skill, attention to detail, and an ability to change and adapt with each day’s assignment.
In the evenings, Cannon, whose high school and university education focused on art, studied under the noted Japanese fashion and figurative illustrator, Setsu Nagasawa, who encouraged his students to capture movement and motion.
Upon emigrating to the U.S. in the mid-1980s, Cannon continued her illustrative work for Japanese periodicals on a freelance basis, at the same time absorbing and becoming conscious of the quiet, peaceful beauty of her new home in Pendleton, OR.
