“I was inspired to create ‘Sisters of the Sea’ by a trip to St. Thomas. I felt that a more realistic technique would better communicate the image I visualized among the reefs. But then I couldn’t leave well enough alone. So I painted some ‘Coral Faeries’ instead of mermen. I felt that mermen would have looked intrusive in this sisterly scene.
“The sisterly aspect of this image was important to me. I’ve painted mermaids before, naturally concentrating on their fish-like, other-worldly aspects. This time, however, in keeping with the more realistic technique, I decided to explore their human side.
“The look of wistful esteem on the face of the youngest mermaid as she gazes dreamily at her older sister is a look I think parents and siblings alike will recognize.”
