Description
Sound of a Distant Bugle by Howard Terpning
A modern-day gathering at Big Horn River, in which a group of young Native American men charged into the river on horseback, inspired Howard Terpning’s Sound of a Distant Bugle.
What started out as an afternoon’s bathing in the river is cut short by a sound that portends no good, and the two leaders – central to both the tribe and the composition of the painting – stop everything they are doing before giving the command to reassemble and ride back, fast, to their now endangered village.
