Steptoe Retreat by Nona Hengen
Greatly outnumbered, ammunition depleted and facing almost certain catastrophe in the morning, Steptoe confers with his officers and orders a nocturnal retreat to Fort Walla Walla.
The suffering between the troops is great, and the horses are limp with exhaustion. Casualties are in the masses, and something has to be done about it. The dark, starless night looms over the troops as they finally decide to retreat.
