Vanishing Pony Tracks by Howard Terpning
A party of four Plains Indian warriors, who have successfully stolen a parcel of ponies from trappers, are on the run back home with their prize. Considered a sport among the Plains Indians, horse stealing was also a means of acquiring honor and prestige among the tribe, as well as increasing the size and variety of equine stock.
And it wasn’t easy. Though the initial heist no doubt took place in the middle of the night, the trappers would not be slow in pursuit, and these raiders are using every trick they know – including crossing and re-crossing rivers in the hopes of frustrating their pursuers – to keep from getting caught.
