More About John Weiss

“I enjoy painting things people can relate to,” John Weiss says, “perhaps because I can relate to them myself. They’re familiar things, part of an everyday life we can understand and enjoy.” Weiss developed this appreciation during his childhood in Akron, Ohio. His father was a draftsman to whom John credits his disciplined approach to art. He drew throughout his childhood and developed his skill in high school art classes. On a trip to Maine, he saw an exhibit of Andrew Wyeth’s work, which inspired him to pursue art while attending Kent State University. Weiss left college after two years to go into the landscape business, but he returned to full-time painting within four years. “My work is essentially self-taught,” he maintains. “I study the work of artists I admire and learn from their methods and techniques. I studied color theory by referring to a color wheel and mixing paints. Experience is the best teacher.” Weiss persevered with his study and his dedication has paid off. Today his paintings of dogs and of horses have an avid and loyal following. “Word of mouth has resulted in my works being sold all over the world,” he says. “There was even one portrait of a dog that was presented to Queen Elizabeth by Lady Barlow.” Weiss’ work is exhibited regularly and recently he won the “Cover of the Year” award from the National Dog Writers Association.

Howard Terpning

Storyteller of the Native American

When it comes to excellence in Western Art, Howard Terpning is the name that heads the list of fine artists. In a successful career that spans seven decades, Terpning has defined western art, most notably the interaction of the 19th century Native American Midwest tribes and the burgeoning westward pioneer movement.

Howard Terpning’s awards for his work, bestowed by colleagues and professional art associations, are numerous – among the three most prestigious include the National Academy of Western Art’s Prix de West, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Autry National Center, and the Hubbard Art Award for Excellence, not to mention countless awards from the Cowboy Artists of America.

Nicknamed the Storyteller of the Native American, Howard Terpning was educated at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and the American Academy of Art. He began a career in professional illustration in the 1950s, gaining attention for his detailed and compelling illustrative work, which included cinema posters for such classic films as The Sound of Music, Cleopatra, The Guns of Navarone, Dr. Zhivago, and the 1967 re-release of Gone with the Wind.

By the mid-1970s, Howard decided to pursue his passion for Native American history, focusing specifically the American West and Plains Indians, and began creating fine art paintings that he showed and sold in galleries throughout the U.S. West. Within three years he left commercial art, moved to Arizona, and launched fulltime into painting the American West.

In less than two years, he was elected into both the National Academy of Western Art and the Cowboy Artists of America, the latter organization with which he was actively involved for 22 years, earning 42 awards during that time. Especially notable exhibitions of Terpning’s work include The Grand Palais in Paris, a special display in Beijing, China, a 1985 retrospective at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and a one-man show at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis, Indiana.

More About Kenneth Riley

Kenneth Riley is dedicated not only to authenticity, ethnography and history, but also to allegory and spirituality. His work has been called classical, sophisticated, gentle and sensitive. Descended from Irish immigrants on his father’s side and Dutch farmers on his mother’s, he was born in Waverly, a small town by the bend of a river in north- central Missouri. Riley was a self-taught drummer, and gained some success touring with Eddie Lain and His Orchestra. But art turned out to be his true career and he pursued it to the Kansas City Art Institute, where he studied drawing with Thomas Hart Benton for a year, developing his skill in interlocking shapes and rhythmic patterns. He was also influenced by teacher Harvey Dunn, who studied with Howard Pyle. World War II found Coast Guard Specialist Second Class Kenneth Riley on duty as one of the conflict’s most honored combat artists. Following the war, Riley found fame as an illustrator, starting with The Saturday Evening Post and later working with Life and National Geographic. After he was chosen to paint Teton and Yellowstone National Parks as part of the Society of Illustrators’ Artists in the Parks program and was invited to teach at Brigham Young University in Utah, Riley decided to move West to pursue a fine art career. William Phillips

More About William Phillips

William Phillips focuses on the world of nostalgia, both on the land and in the air.

His paintings of small town America, which span a time from the 1930s to present day, showcase the imaginary town of Phillips Bay, everyone’s dream hometown of country picnics, Fourth of July firework celebrations and church socials.

courtyard william phillips bay vintage nostalgia americana town

Courtyard, a play on the words “court” and “yard,” focuses on a young couple in a classic Americana setting in William Phillips’ imaginary town, Phillips Bay.

This is the place where families gather together to love, laugh, and create the history that really matters – the lives of regular, ordinary people who aren’t so ordinary after all, because it is their hard work and devotion to the true good things in life that make a country great.

In Phillips Bay, neighbors are friends, and the sense of nostalgia invites viewers to enter into an idyllic world, chronicling – in Phillips’ unique style – America’s past and present.

Aviation Art

In addition to celebrating the world of vintage America, William Phillips is also known for his aviation paintings, intricately detailed and accurate representations of aircraft, many from World War II. Sixteen of Phillips’ works now hang in the Royal Jordanian Air Force Museum in Amman, having been commissioned by the Royal Jordanian Air Force after one of Phillips’ works was presented to King Hussein of Jordan.

More About Ed Parker

New England born Ed Parker combines a respect for history and great American traditions, with unique inventiveness that has placed him among the leaders of today’s generation of Americana painters. His illustrations have an original way of capturing the complexity of modern culture with a sometimes compelling, often-whimsical sense of tradition.
